Early career
I started my working life in a business administration job, before deciding to embark on a marketing career. I worked for a food manufacturer, and later for a construction supplies company, as a Marketing Assistant for a couple of years, while working towards my marketing qualifications.
During that time, I gained experience in developing branded materials, such as printed brochures, flyers, and adverts, plus competitor analysis.
Fast forward a few years, and…
In 2003, I began working as a Marketing Executive for a public sector organisation in the field of education. There, I worked on many different marketing campaigns, promoting school leadership training. I devised marketing plans, implemented them, and evaluated them. Then my career took a change in direction.
A stint in event management
While working for the same organisation, I transferred into an event management position, which involved organising large-scale conferences and exhibitions for school leaders. I’ve always been a stickler for attention-to-detail and so this job suited me down to the ground. In this role, I worked with movers and shakers, liaising with the board of directors, celebrity keynote speakers, Members of Parliament and other key influencers. I learned about all about professional responsibility, quality, and what delivering excellence really means.
Becoming an influencer through blogging
I was happy with my job, but I’d always wanted to set up my own business doing something I loved. However, I didn’t know how to get started. Then in 2010, I came across an article about the benefits of blogging and becoming an influencer. The main benefit that caught my eye was the possibility of making money online! I was on maternity leave with my daughter at the time and was looking for smart ways to make money from home.
I had always enjoyed writing, so I decided to set up a blog of my own, on the topic of personal finance. Turns out, blogging was the best thing I ever did. It enabled me to learn many new skills. I became proficient in WordPress web design for one. I developed my social media skills across different channels. I learned how to write, format and publish eBooks on Amazon.com (and consequently had a bestseller in the personal finance category). I learned about how Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how to influence my website’s search engine rankings.
That blog was a resounding success. I created a valuable income stream with it and I achieved recognition from the industry (2016 Money Blogger of the Year). But most importantly, blogging opened other doors for me. I began to get approached by companies who wanted me to write about personal finance for them. It wasn’t long after that when I sold my blog, started writing compelling content on other topics/niches and began offering social media and marketing services too. The rest, as they say, is history.
